What Is Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to improve the shape, symmetry, and overall appearance of the ears. This procedure can be done for both children and adults, and it’s often used to correct ear abnormalities that are present at birth or that have developed due to injury or trauma.

Otoplasty can be used to correct a variety of ear issues, including the following:

• Prominent ears (ears that stick out too far from the head)
• Cupped ears (ears that are too small or have an unusual shape)
• Lop ears (ears that fold down and forward)
• Shell ears (ears that are missing the natural folds and creases)
• Asymmetrical ears
• Low-hanging ears
• Earlobe damage

What Is the Recovery Like After Ear Surgery?

After your otoplasty procedure, you’ll need to wear a headband or bandages around your ears to protect them and promote proper healing. You can expect some swelling and bruising for the first few days, but this will gradually subside. It’s important to leave the bandages in place and not rub or scratch your ears, despite any itching as they heal. Most patients can return to work or school within a week, but it’s important to avoid any strenuous physical activity for at least a month. To ensure proper healing and optimal results, it’s imperative that you follow all of Dr. Forman’s instructions during your recovery.
